In The Heights (2021)

If you're familiar with Broadway musicals, this one is also made by the genius behind Hamilton - actually, this was made way back in the mid-2000s by Lin Manuel-Miranda. The movie adaptation did not disappoint at all! Jon M. Chu (The same director of Crazy Rich Asians) really interpreted the show well by incorporating a new perspective to the existing idea of the show.

My favorite part is the showstopper Paciencia y Fe performed by Olga Merediz who played the original role of Abuela Claudia when In The Heights opened on Broadway. She was the perfect fit for the role and I'm so glad they got her to reprise it in the movie adaptation. She still can belt the song and it was given a whole new refreshing look with Chu's visual feast for the song - I literally cried.

This isn't your typical jukebox musical movie *cough* The Greatest Showman *cough*, this is a legit musical movie that incorporated the songs into its core to create a seamless story from start to finish.

Overall, the movie adaptation gave justice to the original source material and improved further!

How to Apply for a Philippine Senior Citizen ID

As we grow older, our parents also do and when you're like me who's nearing the big 3-0 then your parents might be nearing their senior citizen age. If that's the case then read after the jump to find out how you can help them obtain this super useful identification card.

Senior-Citizen-ID-Application-Process

First off, how do you determine if your parents or relative is now eligible for a Senior Citizen  ID? It's actually super easy, just check the the requirements below.

- Must be a Filipino Citizen
- Must be 60 years old and above
- Must be a resident of the city you are applying for at least 6 months

Now, if your parents or relative fits the requirements above then that means it's time for them to get their Senior Citizen ID. As I mentioned, this is a super useful identification card as they can use this to avail certain benefits such as discounts on food, services, groceries, and even free movie entry every week!

Requirements and Documents Needed

Since we're residents of Quezon City, the steps and requirements indicated below are for Quezon City. it doesn't differ that much per city but it's best to check with your local Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA) to see if they have additional requirements or steps in applying.

Application-Form-for-Senior-Citizen-ID-Philippines

First thing you'll need to do is help your parents or relatives in gathering the requirements. They are fairly easy, but if they lack ID's, it's best to process those first.

(1) Accomplished application form. For Quezon City, you may download it HERE.
(2) Recent 1" x 1" ID photo, bring 4 or more.
(3) Photocopy of any of the valid ID's below, any combination is good as long as it bears the applicant's name, date of birth & present address. If they have more than 2 ID's, add it so that application process is faster.

Voter's ID (Comelec)
Driver's License
NBI Clearance
Police Clearance
Old Residence Certificate
Postal ID (New PVC type)
Valid Passport

Remember to have multiple CLEAR photocopies in case they need more copies and also bring the originals in case they need to validate some of the identification documents presented. For the application form, it's best to help them by adding the details needed on your computer instead of writing manually, it'll lessen the processing time once you're there in the OSCA office.

Submitting and Getting the ID

Once you've completed the requirements, it's time to go to your local Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs to submit. Remember that the applicant must be present during the application as they need to sign a few documents.

In Quezon City, contrary to the address you can find online and when you book a ride on Grab, the OSCA is located now in a different location near the Quezon City Hall of Justice building. Here's a quick map of where the office is now located. They said it's  temporary one, so it's best to double check somewhere else before heading there.

Once you arrived at the OSCA, just tell the staff that your companion is applying for a senior citizen ID. You'll be assisted to the designated table for your Barangay's district, waiting time may depend on how many are in queue in your specific district. Remember that there's no payment needed, so be wary if they ask for payment - only replacement ID requests needs to be paid.

Office-of-the-Senior-Citizens-Affair-Quezon-City

Once they are up, the person in charge will just get all the requirements, check them and start processing their Senior Citizen ID. They will stick the 1 x 1 ID Photos to the senior citizen booklet, their data book, and on the senior citizen ID. After this, they will give you the booklets for discounts and explain how to use them.

And you're done. All you have to do now is add the signature and thumb print to the ID and have it laminated. Remember that the issued Senior Citizen ID is permanent and doesn't need to be renewed over a certain period of years.

Again, this guide is just a basic guide and might differ from city to city so it's best to double check with your city's respective Office of the Senior Citizens Affair to clarifications on the requirements and process. Also a quick disclaimer that the process presented here are accurate during the time this article is published and is subject to be changed without notice.

Sumo Niku at The SM North Towers, is it worth it?

In search of everything delicious in the metro, we stumbled upon a new unlimited yakiniku place in the newly opened wing of SM City North EDSA called the North Towers in Quezon City. We gave it a try, so read on and see if it's worth it.

sumo-niku-north-towers-review

Located in the second level of the two-level SM North Towers Mall, Sumo Niku offers Unlimited Yakiniku with different options and rates depending on the time of the day. They are under the same company of Yakimix and Buffet101. We visited it on a Sunday night and the wait time is pretty bearable.

sumo-niku-sm-north-towers

They have a list system for seat reservations, the lady manning the reservations was a little unorganized with her list which needs improvement. We are 18th on the list so we told her we're just going around since there are no seats for those waiting but upon returning at 5-10 minutes, we were told our names had already been called and we had to get listed again. Later on we found out she just calls the name two times with a few seconds interval and if you're not there then tough luck.

After being seated, we settled down to our table and given the option on what Unlimited option we're going to enjoy. Sumo Niku offers two options, Pork + Chicken and Pork + Beef + Chicken, we opted for the 3 meat choices option which comes with unlimited side dishes and iced tea.  Here's their rates in case you can't see the photo below properly.

Pork + Beef + Chicken with unlimited side dishes and iced tea

sumo-niku-meat-options

When we visited, their chicken meats are not available (but they are still charging the same for the 3-meat options), as for the side dishes only kimchi, okra, seaweeds, and cucumber are available which sucks a little since half of the side dishes menu are not available.

sumo-niku-side-dish

We started ordering and saw that we only have a maximum of 2 kinds of meat per order and we need to finish those before we can request for the next set of meats. Service is pretty okay at first, they served the drinks, rice, and side dishes right away. The side dishes taste great, especially the seaweeds and the miso soup.

sumo-niku-side-dishes

When the first order of meats arrived, we were a little disappointed on the serving size. Given that it's unlimited, I think they need to increase the serving size if they are limiting it to two kinds of meat per serving. We ordered the US Premium Beef and the Wagyu Beef, the US Premium beef has around 6 thin beef slices while the wagyu has around 7 small cubes of meat, that's already for the two of us in our table.

sumo-niku-premium-beef
sumo-niku-wagyu-beef

Their grills are equipped with those industrial style smoke catchers attached from the ceiling, so the smoke is bearable and you won't go out smelling like you actually got grilled. We started cooking and the first set of meats we ordered tastes great, especially wagyu cubes that literally as soft as clouds in your mouth.

After finishing our first set of meat, we started ordering the second set and this is where it went a little downhill in terms of service. We're not sure if they are understaffed or this is part of their technique to turn over tables faster but it took a solid 10-15 minutes for the second set of meat to arrive.

As the dinner rolls on, the wait time became longer and longer even for side dishes and drinks that we sometimes have to reorder again through another staff. Our table's grill keeps turning off too without us knowing why, we'll just notice our meats aren't cooking so we'll call on one of their staff to turn it on again - this kept happening until we finished our dinner.

Sumo Niku is pretty new but I do hope they improve their service fast as the first few months are crucial to newly opened businesses and negative experiences on first-time customers can make a huge impact on their restaurant's longevity. I'll give them a try again in a few months or so to see if they already improved service-wise.

Breakout at Breakout Philippines' Newest Branch at Greenbelt 5!

If your barkada is getting tired of doing the usual activities like watching a movie or eating out then Breakout is the perfect out-of-the-box bonding experience that you are looking for!

breakout-philippines-greenbelt-1

Fresh from our Breakout experience at SM City North EDSA a few months ago, we headed to Breakout's newest branch at Greenbelt 5 to check out and try their newest rooms. Located at the 3rd level of Greenbelt 5, Breakout's newest location still features the familiar black box type lobby with wood accents and features 4 exciting new rooms for your team to try.

In case you're not familiar with Breakout and how the game works, Breakout Philippines lets you live in different scenarios with well-crafted storylines full of unexpected twists and turns that you have to solve in order to escape. Immerse yourself in an interactive game where you need to find clues and solve logic puzzles based on various storylines and themed rooms.

The goal is to ESCAPE THE ROOM IN 45 MINUTES. Players are encouraged to PLAN as a team, SOLVE puzzles collaboratively in order to ESCAPE before time expires.

Get locked-up in these rooms...

There are a total of 4 new rooms that will be available at Breakout's newest branch in Makati although only 3 are available as of this writing. Here's a quick look at the backstories of each room so you can plan ahead and pick which rooms are you going to try first.

PARANOIA

News has been going around that a ward in a particular asylum bears witness to a series of inexplicable deaths of the patients admitted there. To put an end to the mystery, the asylum was temporarily closed down so authorities can conduct further investigation.

Now, you and your team of journalists were tasked to write a story about the case, so you joined the probe and went to the asylum to do some research and see for yourselves. But upon entering, you smell the faint but unmistakable scent of the asylum… and then you hear the door lock itself shut behind you.

Will you be able to shed light on the case and help put a stop to the horrifying events? You have 45 minutes to do so, or you will be trapped forever in a perpetual state of Paranoia

CORPSE BRIDE

In your neighborhood, there was a popular dress shop owned by a newlywed couple. They ran their business with passion, and their love for each other was reflected on each and every dress they created.

However, not even a year into their wedding, the wife got extremely ill and died. Her husband, wilting in his grief, became so uninspired with his craft that the once bright and welcoming shop soon turned gloomy and desolate. Because of this, people eventually stopped visiting the shop and he lost his business. The once loyal patrons started wondering though, why was there no funeral for the wife? What if she is still alive? Where was the husband now?

Will your curiosity get you in trouble or will it shed light to the town’s unanswered questions? You have 45 minutes to unveil the secrets behind this shop, and Breakout.

ACCIDENTAL AGENT

You had a sleepover with your brother and cousins and played Truth or Dare. After intense rounds of Dares, your brother opted to be different and tried Truth. After much prodding, he ended up sharing “confidential information” that he was actually a spy for a secret organization.

Of course this was a wild claim and nobody believed him… until the next day. You wake up and notice that your brother is missing. More than that, the room is bolted from the outside and you can’t get out. You find a note by the printer, it seems to be a list of to do's. What's going on?

You have 45 minutes. Can you complete the list and breakout or will you be trapped forever?

Lastly, as mentioned earlier, there's an upcoming fourth room that will open soon and before it even open, here's a quick look on what you can expect from the fourth room. You should expect this to open really soon!

THE ISLAND

Thousands of feet above the pure blue ocean, you and your friends are in a plane, headed to your long-awaited vacation. Minutes away from paradise, the plane begins to experience extreme turbulence. As the turbulence continues...

Black. You realize that you are on a sandy beach in the middle of nowhere. You see your friends, the plane wreckage, and nothing else. You and your friends seem to be the only survivors. What happened? Where are the other passengers and cabin crew? Will you be rescued? What is this place? Where are you?

You have 45 minutes. Will you survive or will you be trapped on the Island forever?

The Experience: #TrappedForever

We tried a couple of the rooms on our visit, first was Paranoia. The experience was surreal and really immersive, it will really need the heads of everyone in order to progress into the game. Unfortunately, time got the best of us and we didn't came out victorious in this room.

The second room we tried is Corpse Bride, the backstory itself is quite interesting while the gameplay also immersed us deeply into the story. What's great about this room is that you're slowly uncovering layer after layer of the story about the couple. But just like the first room we tried, time got the best of us and we didn't come our successful BUT we reached 70% progress which is not bad.

If you're excited to give their rooms a try, make sure to reserve your rooms right away by heading to their website www.breakout.com.ph.

Seamless Experience with the Improved Shipping Cart

My most popular blog posts here at AlexBam in 3D are my review posts and that’s no wonder because it’s already 2017 where we tend to search for reviews online first before diving into a new service or product.

One of my most read post is my review of ShippingCart.com and to continue what I started last 2015 (click here to read) and 2016 (click here to read), now here is my 2017 review of Shipping Cart!

When Shipping Cart started out a few years ago, they were fairly new and the first & the second time I tried them I experienced a few minor hiccups but overall good, last 2016’s experience wasn’t as smooth as the first two as I experienced delays because of their system upgrade. This year, I gave Shipping Cart a try again to see if their ‘system improvements’ really improved the way they handle shipments.

The Packages and Surprising Change!

As always, I list down the packages involved in this review and how long before they showed up in my Shipping Cart account. Below are the items, date they were delivered, and date when they showed up in my account.

Funko Dorbz Ridez Collector Corps Star-Lord with the Milano
Delivered to Shipping Cart Warehouse: June 12, 2017
Date showed up in Shipping Cart Account: June 12, 2017

Leather Bag
Delivered to Shipping Cart Warehouse: June 14, 2017
Date showed up in Shipping Cart Account: June 15, 2017

Funko Home Star-Lord Collector Corps Mug
Delivered to Shipping Cart Warehouse: June 19, 2017
Date showed up in Shipping Cart Account: June 19, 2017

Funko Pop Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Star Lord
Delivered to Shipping Cart Warehouse: July 6, 2017
Date showed up in Shipping Cart Account: July 7, 2017

Funko Pop Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Ego
Delivered to Shipping Cart Warehouse: July 8, 2017
Date showed up in Shipping Cart Account: July 9, 2017

Notice something surprising with the items above? No, not that majority of the items are Guardians of the Galaxy related products, it’s that all of them showed up in my cart within 24 hours after getting delivered in their warehouse and I was actually surprised plus at the same time impressed on how they handle incoming shipments now.

If you checked my past reviews, it showed up after a few days which sometimes can reach a week, this is one of the effects of their recent upgrade. No more worrying where your packages are in the warehouse, I’m happy to report that Shipping Cart drastically improved here.

Improved Customer Service Experience

One of my main comments on my 2016 review is how it’s really REALLY hard to contact Shipping Cart, especially if you have concerns about your packages. Thank goodness they did something about it, well sort of.

During the process of the doing this review, I was curious to know if Shipping Cart ships Minoxidil (it’s a tonic used by people to grow hair, I use it to grow a beard) and since it’s liquid, I asked first on their social media if this is allowed since their website doesn’t go into details about prohibited items. I didn’t get an immediate reply but instead received a link where I can send my inquiry.

The link (https://goo.gl/l1CEPJ) will lead you to a Google form where you can address your concern, note that you will need a Shipping Cart account to proceed with your inquiry as they require your account number in the form. They promise to reply back within 3 business days after submission.

After submitting my inquiry, I honestly expected them to respond way past the 3-day promise but I was wrong because the following day, I already got a response from one of their customer representatives who answered the inquiry I submitted.

I was seriously amazed what a year can do; Shipping Cart really improved their system and made it more convenient to reach out to them for inquiries regarding their service.

I actually got to try their customer service again recently as I have a second shipment as of this writing. They mistakenly measured the items I ordered from Amazon inside the box and you know how massive Amazon boxes are. I asked it to be measured again and even sent links to what their actual size is. After a couple of days, customer service got back to me and informed me they measured and updated the computed weight in my cart from 4.95 down to 2.5. Now that’s the customer service I was talking about!

Back To My Shipment

After all the items showed up in my cart, I immediately checked how much the shipping fees are for both Air Cargo and Sea Cargo. As mentioned in my past reviews, Air Cargo will reach you within 13 days while 45 days for Sea Cargo, Shipping Cart just updated it and Air Cargo will now reach you within 10 days – more about this after the jump.

Here’s a quick comparison of the prices of my shipment, Air Cargo versus Sea Cargo;

Air Cargo Computation

Sea Cargo Computation

I like to receive mine fast so I opt for Air Cargo like I always do. Make sure to subscribe to Shipping Cart’s newsletter as they normally send out discount promo codes for participating banks and even flash discount code for special events.

I was talking about their updated 10 days delivery promise for Air Cargo, this is because Shipping Cart also did an upgrade on how regular they ship out packages from the US to the Philippines. Their Air Cargo shipments now fly from the US to the Philippines 7 days a week, which means shipments arrive faster!

Shipping Out and Delivery Of Items

I picked Air Cargo and proceed with the normal checkout process, if you’re not familiar with how it works or didn’t read my past reviews, it’s fairly simple. Once you picked the items you’re going to ship out and the way it’ll be shipped, you’ll be directed to a checkout page where you need to pay for your shipment. Shipping Cart has different options for you to pay like Credit Card and Paypal -- please note that Over-the-Counter Payment will soon be delisted as a payment method.

I shipped and paid via Paypal on July 12, 2017 with an estimated delivery date of July 24. I was hoping it will really get delivered on the estimated delivery date but I was wrong, IT ACTUALLY ARRIVED WAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!

I tracked the package via LBC’s website, Shipping Cart's partner courier and by July 17, it actually arrived in the Philippines already and scheduled for delivery within 2 days. True enough, July 18 my shipment arrived at home, that’s 6 days after I shipped out!

#ShipYourFinds: What’s in my Shipping Cart Box

Shipping Cart’s campaign this year is #ShipYourFinds where they encourage Shipping Cart users to highlight their shopping hauls featuring various kinds of finds. So I guess it’s just the perfect time for me to show my readers what I bought from the US for this review.

I’m big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Guardians of the Galaxy stood out for me. What I like about the movie is that it features a human (well actually, half human) like us but fighting intergalactic beings outside of his home planet, I’m talking about Star-Lord. Most of my finds are from the movie and most are acquired through eBay bidding.

First on my shopping haul is the Dorbz Ridez Star-Lord with the Milano. It’s a limited edition, Collector Corps item that I watched on eBay for a few days, I luckily snagged the item under $15. This was followed by the Funko Home Star-Lord collectible mug which is also part of the Marvel Collector Corps, I snagged this under $10 which is a steal!

Next on my haul are a couple of Funko Pop Figures, also both from the Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. A Star-Lord Vinyl Figure and an Ego Vinyl Figure. If you’re not familiar with the second movie, Ego is Star-Lord’s father who happens to be a God, but then things get a little downhill from there. I decided to start off my Guardians of the Galaxy collection with this Father & Son duo.

Lastly, for my non-Guardians of the Galaxy haul, I was looking for a new leather mini bag for quite some time. I found some on a Hong Kong based site but I wasn’t sure about the quality, so off the Ebay US I go. Sure enough, I found a better-looking leather bag for only $12 + shipping. I immediately bought it and had it shipped to my Shipping Cart address.

How did Shipping Cart Perform on this Review?

I’m so glad to report that Shipping Cart’s upgrade improved a lot of things from their warehouse, customer service, to delivery. Compared to my past couple reviews, they did a fantastic job of taking notes of the customer reviews and building a better Shipping Cart in return.

Shipping Cart is the service that Pinoys has been longing to have. It's the service that connects Filipinos with the US by giving them the freedom to find and buy items that is not available locally without the worry of figuring out how to ship it to the Philippines or if it will even arrive!

I’ll definitely continue using their service for my online shopping finds in the coming years and I can’t wait on next shopping haul from the US. Have you tried Shipping Cart recently? Share your experience in the comments below!

The Dilemma of Choosing The Perfect Home Entertainment Companion for the Modern Family

Unlike normal home appliances that get worn out fast, Televisions are not regularly replaced in typical Pinoy homes. We tend to get attached to it and use it for years until it breaks down, but once the time comes for you to replace your beloved TV you'll end up with a question - What TV do I get?

Step into a typical Filipino home and you'll find that the TV is the main focal point of the house. For instance, the living room is set up in a way that the sofa faces the entertainment system. Pinoys can't help it because we love our telenovelas and movies.

Because I work at home, I usually have the TV on for more than 8 hours a day, it keeps me entertained and at the same time gives me that quick break when workload piles up. I haven't upgraded my entertainment system in a while and still using the 42" Sony Bravia TV that I bought a few years ago, it still works flawlessly but it's not a smart TV so I tend to just connect my laptop via HDMI when the need occurs.

Now back to the question, when the time comes that you need an upgrade on your home TV, how will you decide what to get for the family? I've been checking out the latest ones in the market and I think I found the perfect one for any modern family, the Sony Bravia X8000D.

Why is the Sony BRAVIA X8000D the Perfect Home Entertainment Companion for the Modern Family?

Definitely, number one reason why I think the Sony BRAVIA X8000D is a great choice is that it comes from Sony. My family has been a Sony product user since I was young and the quality is really superior. But aside from being from Sony, the BRAVIA X8000D also packs a mighty punch when it comes to what it can offer.

Image: Sony Philippines Website

The first thing that I love about this is its Connectivity - it's Android and can be easily connected to the internet, no more connecting my laptop to the TV via HDMI. And because it's a Sony Android TV, the family can enjoy using apps from the Google Play Store, you can even connect your mobile devices wirelessly through its Built-in Google Chromecast, perfect for Netflix movie nights with the family!

Image: Sony Philippines Website

As for picture quality, it boasts a stunning 4K Ultra HD resolution and 4K X-Reality PRO to enhance every picture you play on your entertainment system. And because it doesn't stop with just clear picture, you also need vibrant colors, this is where Bravia's TRILUMINOS Display comes in, this feature means no more oversaturated & unnatural colors on your screen.

As for other features that stood out, the X-Protection PRO: Xtra Protection TV is a perfect feature included in this series. What they basically did is they made this TV stronger, as it has advanced protection against electrical surges and unstable electricity, no more worrying when it's the rainy season where we experience a lot of sudden power outages. Aside from that, it also has an anti-humidity coating on the circuit board to prevent short-circuits caused by high moisture. Awesome feature fit for the Philippine climate!

Image: Sony Philippines Website

Last on my reason why this is perfect is because of its sleek minimalist design. I love how they made this series beautifully designed to fit into any home with slim style and polished metal accents.

They even thought about the cables at the back with a nice Cable Management set-up that keeps the wires out of sight as it runs down through the center of the stand at the back.

I can still list down more reasons why the Sony BRAVIA X8000D series is perfect for any modern family home but this blog post might get too long 😄. Just head to the Sony Philippines Website for more details about the Sony BRAVIA X8000D series and where you could get one.
